PERSONAL NOTES
From Dr. K. Baba: "I have been silent to many of my friends. Kindly excuse me for it but
I was trying to finish my study program of many of the opisthobranch forms of Japan, more
or less satisfactorily for some species and less so for some others. I hope to prepare
MS of papers before long."
Congratulations to Jeff & Marsha Hamman on the birth of their daughter Elita Hamman on
January 4, 1983.
From Eveline Marcus (Nov. 24, 1982): "I received a copy of: Luise Schmekel & A. Portmann
(he died a short time ago) 1982, Opisthobranchia des Mittelmeeres, Nudibranchia und
Saccoglossa. - Fauna e Flora del Golfo di Napoli. No. 40, Monografia della Stazione di
Napoli. (Springer Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg, New York, 1982.) 410pp., 36 pls, and lots of
text figures (with such a double numbering, that one can't count them).
It treats 127 species, 14 new, 65 new for Naples. It is intended to be used also by
amateurs, most of the species descriptions have an English part (I don't know why the
first species has none). There are 40 pp of general facts, key geography, anatomy,
embryology, phylogeny; the rest are the families and species. Eighteen coloured plates,
ei 11 with teeth, 7 with reproductive organs. I don't know the price, I think it is over
Now I am beginning to find my way through the Pleurobranchidae. They are in a terrible
state of incomplete descriptions, and synonymisations without justifications. I will
restrain myself to those that have the characters I think indespensable. But the
distribution can't be given. Even the names, when the animals are fully described later
than their first naming, do not mean that the first find is really the same species.... Even
the genera are not sure, in the synonymies of one species often 4 different genera. Poor
me.
I had an extremely good visit of Terry Gosliner and family, it was only too short, but I
could show them the Iguac#-Falls, though those don't have any relations to opisthos.
Neither had the polyclad turbellarian that I had to classify, from Californian oysters.
For the rest I am getting old and forgetful, but I hope to be able to continue my
"Catalogue of the Western Atlantic Warm Water Opisthobranchs'. The Pleurobranchidae are
Bpone the eighth installment. But when they will be ready for press, I really can't see
yet.
VOL.15(1):2 OPISTHOBRANCH NEWSLETTER JANUARY, 1983.
From Eveline Marcus (Dec. 12, 1982): "Best wishes for 1983 and for the newsletter which
is always interesting! I can add the visit of Joel Hedgpeth to Sao Paulo, from where our
staff had been with Hedgpeth many years ago. My husband and I had only corresponded with
him for 40 years so it was good to see him here at last.
My opisthos are slow, the Pleurobranchidae are the most untidy group I have ever had,
the keys work with inconstant characters, and the descriptions rarely give the necessary
ones, and I don't have much material myself. I hope at least to give a key for the genera,
and what I can tell about the western Atlantic Pleurobranchidae."
From Eveline Marcus (Jan. 22, 1983): "I am more interested in a request to all
interested in Notaspidea - they say Pleurobranchomorpha now. I am old fashioned! My list
of all specific names in the literature comes to about 120-130 pleurobranchid species.
But many of them are unrecognizable because of insufficient descriptions, and many are
put into the synonymy lists of others without justification. It will give me a lot of
trouble to clean up the (about 10) Western Atlantic ones, all this refers only to the
Pleurobranchidae. The Pleurobranchaeidae are in press, and I am expecting the reprints;
they should be out before the end of 1982! While generally everybody treats the shell and
not the anatomy, in this group the shell is neglected, neither size nor position in its
cavity, in front or in the middle or behind, is indicated. This seems to be one of the few
good generic characters. What they give, is often the proportion of width to length of the
animal, and that depends on contraction by fixation, and has no systematic value. There is
such a disorder, that I will leave the animals outside my region for later workers. Butif
someone wants a subject for a thesis, the Pleurobranchidae give a lot of pleasure!!
Specially if he waits till my paper is out, but that will take at least a year. - I am so
full of my beasts that I can only write about my problems, sorry."
From Ian Loch: "In November, Bill Rudman, Geoff Avern and myself went collecting in
northern N.S.W. again. We had intended to dive on the various Solitary Islands which have
some hard corals on them, but, just for a change, the weather turned bad and we were
reduced to tidepoolis again, and managed only one dive offshore, which produced little of
interest except numerous specimens of an undescribed blue spotted Elysia. The coastal
collecting was also fairly poor apart from some Corambe like beasts and Okenia plana on
bryozoans on brown algae. And a Plocamoperus imperialis which obligingly luminesced when
prodded in the dark.
In December, I again went on a diving trip in North Queensland, from Cairns to Raine is.
This was a lot more productive than my December 1981 trip, with about 190 lots comprising
80 species being collected. With a dozen other divers casually collecting on occasions,
the collections are weighted to the more obvious end of the scale e.g. 21 species of
chromodorids, two Halgerda and only one Platydoris, about 17 x 10ems in size. Also well
represented were the high dorids, particularly Nembrotha and Roboastra of which there
where a few undescribed, but not unknown, species with some Gymnodoris and a Kalaplocamus
acuta which luminesced in the dark.
The wind blew a light north westerly for a part of the time which enabled the boat to
hang off the exposed eastern faces of outer reefs. These faces fall very steeply for
several hundred feet, but, while visually spectacular, were not particularly productive
except for Phyllidia and 'Nembrotha'. Rubble habitats seem to fall off Australia. On the
insides of reefs pleurobranchs were more common, especially P. albibuttata, and we found a
P. grandis and a couple of other species new to me.
Other items of interest were a couple of Sagaminopteron psychodelicum, and Chelidonura
pallida, a white Bornella with a few red tips, a large white tritoniid and a number of
Coryphella. The excellent weather certainly makes a difference."
Terry Gosliner visited with Dave Behrens at the Diablo Canyon Biological Research
Laboratory on November 22, 1982.
From 1.S. Rojinskaya: "This summer I had an interesting research trip to Rijkjaness
underwater ridge. My material isn't large (4 specimens of Nudibranchia (deep sea) anda
rather big set of Cephalaspidea) - but I hope - interesting. P.S. - Please use my
Institute address for printed matter only. For letters, please use my private address:
Academician Petrovsky, Str. 3, Apt. 46, Moscow, 117419, USSR"
From Clay Carlson & Patti Jo Hoff: "This year (as was the last) has been somewhat
unproductive. The time we have to collect seems to be almost nil & for some reason work
in the lab just doesn't get started. We keep thinking next year."
From Malcolm Edmunds: "The only news of interest may be that in September I visited the
University Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark for a few days to work with Jean and Hanne Just."
JANUARY, 1983 OPISTHOBRANCH NEWSLETTER VOL.15(1):3
econdly, the Christmas season brought several opisthobranch workers to the San
Franeiseo area. We managed to have an informal get together and slide show at the
Academy with Hans Bertsch, Jeff Goddard, Will Jaeckle, Joan Steinberg and Gary williams in
- attendance. Will Jaeckie would still appreciate specimens of North American Pacifie Date
spp. and Joan Steinbe erg would like Laila material. Photos or color notes would be useful
to beth of ¢ jeff iis completing his Master's at the University of Oregon on
the biology of from Cape Arago, Oregon. Hans is busy with ecological
observations of opisthobranchs be Todos Santos Bay, Mexico. Gary Williams showed slides
of Spieinene anchs from East Africa and adjacent islands. He will be going to the South
African Museum to work on octocorals in March or April."
hiselin: "Although I will not leave here [U. of Utah! officially until
iy in the process of moving, having accepted the position of Research
ee have no curatorial responsiblilities and can devote full time to
hobranch specialists in residence we should have a very strong
program.
Terry Gosliner and I are planning various collaborative projects. I spent a
considerable amount of time with Hans Bertsch over the last few months, and loo ok forward
to more of the e. John Faulkner and I have been working on a manuseript on the
chemical aspects of evolution in dorids, and hope to have in ready for publication in a
few weeks."
From Ron Rutowski: "My special research interest is in the reproductive behavior of
opisthobranchs."
From Sam Spaulding: "I have been actively collecting and photographing the lloca
Opisthobranchiate jolluses since Tee we spoke, even though I have been ‘out-of-touch.!
The past ten years i
and, finally, the pu bli on of my eee enieted Doe Gaiers of the Santa Ynez.
As I See I have never been away from branchs and have been involved with them
throughout. My ‘Santa Ynez' files are fairly complete, and Lf am now able to get back in to
the water with considerably more regularity."
EDITOR'S NOTES
Thanks to Terry Gosliner, Michael Ghiselin, Don Cadien, Jeff Hamman, Jim Lance, Eveline
rceus, ee Willan, K. Baba, Dave Behrens, I. Roginskaya, fan Loe h, Sandra Millen, Sam
oe Iding, and others for information for this issue. It is good to be able to start off
this Ith “olnae the Opisthobranch Newsletter with support from many of you.
Within about 30 days from the time you receive this issue of the ON, I will print a rough
draft of opisthobranch systematics. If anyone has any input for this project, please get
it to me immediately. The list will be presented in systematic order with no authors,
synonyms, or justification, and will simply be the closest I can come to current accepted
ordering from the literature. It will cover all world opisthobranch taxons down to
generic level.
As space permits, I will be re-listing a number of citations in the ON. I have botched
the numbering on about 100 citations and will try to clear. everything up at one time.
Computers are wonderful; they permit rapid duplication of mistakes with a minimum of
effort. iI apologize for the inconvience.

BOOK REVIEWS
MARINE ANIMALS OF BAJA CALIFORNIA, A Guide to the Common Fish and Invertebrates. by
Daniel W. Gotshall, Sea Challengers, Los Osos, California, Published January 1983. 112
pages, about 180 color photos. $17.95 paperback available from Opisthobranch Newsletter or
Sea Challengers.
As usual, this is another excellent book by Dan Gotshall. The photos and drawings are
fine and the color photographs are great. Dan has really contributed to the popular
knowledge of marine animals through his Sea Challenger series. My only complaint about
the series is doubled here by having not only English "translations" of the scientific
names -- but common Spanish names for each fish as well! I guess that is a small price to
pay after waiting so many years for good quality works on limited areas. Four
opisthobranchs are included with color photos (Chromodoris norrisi, Tridachiella
diomedea, Chromodoris sedna, Chromodoris galexorum). -- Steve Long

PERSONAL NOTES
From Sandra Millen: "I should have a range extension paper coming out in the Veliger in April.
Terry Gosliner and Lare just about finished the Aldisa paper. We are also doing a short Cuthona
paper. I am now working on Onechidoris and Adalaria from the Pacific Northwest. The Adalaria
are proving to. be more difficult than Qnchidoris. Could you please put in your newsletter a
request for Adalaria proxima and Adalaria loveni specimens?"
EDITORS NOTES
Help! I have a copy of a?Ph.D. paper entitled: The Role of the Cerata in the Aeolid Nudibranchs
Hermissenda crassicomis (Eschscholtz, 1831) and Aeolidia papillosa (Linnaeus, 1761). with
Supervisor: Dr. R.G.B. Reid. Ineed to know the Author, date, and institution name. Larry Harris &
Peter Fankboner are also on the committee so I suspect it is from Washington state. If I could
find the author I may have the entire paper but I am guessing from a small part which I have in
Xerox.
I also have a "Biological Impact" report for Diablo Canyon (pages 33-44) and cannot identify

CURRENT EVENTS
The 1982 meeting of the Western Society of Naturalists was held at California State University
at Long Beach, in conjunction with the Southern California Ocean Studies Consortium. Meetings
were held between December 27 & December 30, 1982. No specific opisthobranch papers were
presented but the trip to Cabrillo Marine Museum was spectacular for the salt water tanks. Me
tank was loaded with opisthobranchs of about 11 different species and several other tanks had
from one to three or four species. The editor had the opportunity to spend some time with Gordon
Robilliard, Jim Carlton, Bill Austin, Ron Velarde, Chris Kitting, and others.

PERSONAL NOTES
Sandra Millen and family came to California and Baja the first week in April. They spent some
time with Pat LaFollette and family, with the Long family, and with Dave Behrens. They should be
back in Canada by about April 15th. Sven Donaldson is writing more and more books and articles on
Sailing.
From Kathe Jensen: "I have also enclosed the long promised index of Ascoglossa. This turned out
to be much more work than I anticipated, and the listis stillnot complete. But I have to leave the
U.S. next week [about 15 March -- editor]. I will be going back to Denmark for about one month,
and then to Hong Kong to participate in “The 2nd International Workshop on the Malacofauna of
Hong Kong and Southern China’. After that, I don’t know what Ill be doing. I just received a
small grant from the Carlsberg Foundation to continue my work on chemoreception in ascoglossans,
but I can “t afford to go back and forth between Denmark and Florida all the time with no salary
coming in, so I‘1l just have to wait and see. I don’t know when I‘ll be able to work on the index
again. I have it all on a TRS-80 Scripsit diskette, and I think it will be too much work to start all
Over on another system (you should know all about that), not to mention trying to do it on a
regular old-fashioned typewriter." [The list is now available in Spell Binder format, CP/M
(ASCIL) format, Super-Vue, and Vue (Alpha Micro) formats -- editor]
Will Jaeckle is now at USC doing doctoral studies. I havent heard from him as yet as to exactly
what he is doing for his research project. He visited with Jim Lance in San Diego on the 16th of
April. Bobbie and I had Will over for dinner on the 19th of April. Itwasaverynice visit and we
hope to see more of him in the coming months. Rumor has it that Will still travels to Humboldt
County occasionally.

- PAPER
REPORT ON THE 1982 OUTER BAJA CALIFORNIA EXPEDITION
Compiled by
David W. Behrens
Between August 23 - September 2, 1982, fourteen SCUBA divers participating in a Sea
Challengers outer coast of Baja California cruise collected and/or photographed 23 species of
opisthobranch molluscs. Localities collected included San Martin, San Benitos and (Cedros
Islands, as well as Chester Island and a small reef in the SW comer of Vizcaino Bay, Baja
California, Mexico (Table 1). A list of the species is presented in Table 2. Five species are
unknown to science. These are designated in Table 2 by a single asterisk (*). The know
geographical range is extended for 9 species, which are designated by a double asterisk (**)
(Table 2). The range limits given in the table for these species are the previously known range
limits.
The unidentified dorid species noted in Table 2 ("pseudo-porostome") appears similar in
external morphology to Doriopsilla albopunctata (Cooper, 1863) except for the presence of
cephalic tentacles. The radular teeth are hamate with no distinctive denticulation.
Identification of the Janolus sp. (umidentified) was impossible due partially to the fact that the
sole specimen was preserved and not photographed, leaving the body color unknown. The radula
closely matches that of Janolus barbarensis (Cooper, 1863), however the cerata bear irregular
tubercles similar to those of Dirona picta MacFarland in Cockerell & Eliot, 1905. The
Coryphellina sp. (unidentified) is the same species pictured in color in Lance (1980, Discover
Magazine 1(3):58-63). Lastly, the Phyllodesmium sp. (unidentified) was shown in Behrens (1980)
as a Coryphella, no. 155. The description of this species by this author, is in preparation.
Florence McAlary provided additional locality information for this report.

EDITORS NOTES
Tracy B. Capen has a note in the ?March issue of Oceansmagazine. I have not seen it -- please,
someone send me a citation and/or a copy.
As mentioned above, I will be moving to Eureka, California on July 1, 1983. I will try to keep the
Opisthobranch Newsletter issues as smooth as possible. The June issue of the ON will be the
systematic list promised earlier this year. I hope that anyone having comments will be certain to
get them tome as soon as possible -- before publication. Things I want to accomplish in the next
year include updating all of the index materials I have started in the ON. Iwill certainly be able
to use any help available from you.
I put the large batch of rerun citations in alphabetical order to make ita biteasier to find them
and to avoid additional duplication. Under normal circumstances, citations will be numbered as
they come to my attention and not follow alphabetical sequence.
Thanks to Jim Lance, Don Cadien, Ron Velarde, Ian Loch, Jesus Ortea, Dave Behrens, Sandra Millen,
Kikutaro Baba, Will Jaeckle, Jeff Hamann, Wes Farmer, Richard Willan, Hans Bertsch, Eveline
Marcus and others for help with the information for this issue and recent issues.
I keep hearing of anew work on Singapore and/or Hong Kong opisthobranchs. Would anyone having
details please contact me. I would also appreciate the exact ordering details and citation for
the Portman/Schmekel work mentioned by Eveline Marcus in ON 15(1):1.

EDITORS NOTES
I am moving as quickly as possible to Eureka. As note above, I have already purchased a home
there and will move as soon as the house in Long Beachis sold. Iam looking forward to spending
much more time with opisthobranch literature research and correspondence.
The asterisk in the bibliography after the year is a simple code for computer search. I simply
changed from a period (.) to an asterisk (*) so that I can pick off only the author, date, and
citation number from the whole citation.
. My library is going almost totally to microfilm. I have been increasing the number of papers
available on film for several yearsnow (about 10) and hope to be able to obtain copies of all the
citations in the ON for reference. I have started converting from my 3"x5" bibliography file
cards to 105mm x 148mm microfiche cards. I can make either fiche copies or paper copies of any
of the papers which are in my files. I can even find them now!
Thanks again this month for the support you have given the ON. Thanks especially to Eveline
Marcus, Judith Hunter, Don Cadien, Ron Velarde, Dave Behrens, and others.

SYSTEMATIC LIST OF THE OPISTHOBRANCHIA
Following the same basic policy as the Veliger, the ON will accept the most recently published
taxonomic changes as accurate -- provided they have been published in a refereed journal. This
list is an attempt to set a baseline for work. Not all of the most recent changes have been
incorporated and many of the authorities for the higher taxa have not yet been found.
If you find recent changes which are not incorporated in the current systematic list, please send
them to me along with the reference source. Please include the taxon, author, publication date,
and the source reference for each change. If possible, photocopy the section of the ON
systematic list and make the changes right on the photocopy.
If you disagree with a change, or if you want to change something else, please prepare your
arguements and send them to the ON alcong with the changes. They will be refereed prior to
publication in the ON. New placements and arguements or references will be published as they are
received in the next available issue of the ON. At least annually, the entire list should be
reprinted in the ON.

OPISTHOBRANCH LITERATURE NEEDED!!!
I have just spent about a month updating the "Bibliography of Opisthobranchia" with a huge amount
of help from Don Cadien. I am finding that there are several hundred citations which are missing
totally from the bibliography -- and several thousand which I do not have a copy of the paper on
microfilm!
It would be very helpful to have a complete set of separates from each of you who can afford to
send them. I will be happy to credit you with $.01 per page (you count the pages) for any
opisthobranch papers (printed originals only -- not photocopies or electrostatic copies) which
you sendtome. This includes your reprints and any extra separates you wish to send old or new,
by any author. Please note that I will accept entire libraries on this basis, as long as each
paper, book, or article lists opisthobranchs. These credits may be used to extend your ON
subscription, buy back volumes of the ON, buy microfiche copies, buy paper copies, or simply be
your donation to help the ON keep going and become more useful.
Books sent on the terms above should include a note telling me how many pages are included and
should be registered or insured for delivery if the value is significant to you. As long as you
are insuring delivery and accept the terms above, it is not necessary to write for pre-approval.
I believe this should make the ON available to many more people and, at the same time, help me to
see every paper published on opisthobranchs.
As in the past, I am happy to trade subscriptions with other publications on a yearly basis.
Please write if interested.
Please send copies of all of your current reprints even if you have recently sent them. Many
have become lost in the mail or have already been traded to someone for other opisthobranch
Papers. I will list extra papers in the ON from time to time as I have done in the past which will
be available for purchase or trade. The ultimate purpose is to complete a set of all
opisthobranch literature for indexing and to be able to provide film or paper copies of any
individual information needed for research on opisthobranchs. I have already spent fifteen
years trying to put together this research tool and will probably spend the next fifteen years
working to complete the project.
If you are willing to loan me your library please contact me at your earliest convience. Many of
you have individual books and papers which I will never see if you do not help with this project.

EDITOR ‘S NOTES
I am preparing the July and August issues of the ON in early July so that I will be able to print and
mail shortly after moving to Eureka, California. I have received only one or two comments on the
Systmatic List to date which must mean that everyone accepts it as is orelse a pile of mail will be
awaiting me in Bayside.
As of today, July 8, 1983, we have already purchased our home in Bayside and my company, Zytron,
has agreed to move me to Eureka and allowme to continue doing my same job via telephone. Youmay
leave messages for me in Los Angeles, at (213)327-6280 if that is more convient or less
expensive. The moving company is expected to pick up our household goods on July 25th and
deliver them about July 27th. Roberta will follow upnorth to set up the house immediately and I
will probably be in Eureka by July 30th.
My daughter, Kristin, has graduated from Junior High School and moved back to Baywood Park.
Roberta has been keeping up the subscription lists for the ON and helping with the innumerable
tasks necessary to maintin the newsletter.

INFORMATION EXCHANGE
According to both Dr. Baba and Dr. Marcus, Crosslandia viridis is a Scyllaeid.
Concerning the Janolus sp. reported from Cedros Island in the last ON issue: Thanks to Florence
McAlery, photos of the animal have surfaced. The one specimen available isin poor condition but
it is almost certainly an undescribed species. The radula is similar to Janolus barbarensis but
the external features differ markedly. The dorsal papillae are bulbous with a thin, transparent
orange apical ring. J. barbarensis has opaque blue bands. The liver diverticula is highly

opisthobranchs collected in Humboldt Coumty, California.
The latest information I have says Gosliner’s "Nudibranchs of Southern Africa." will not be
available for several more months.
Dave Behrens needs specimens of Berthellina citrena (B. engeli) Ruppell & Leuckart, 1828 from

EDITOR'S NOTES
Best wishes to Dr. Thomas Gascoigne on his 80th birthday last month. Thanks so very much to
Don Cadien for the tremendous amount of help with filming and other work during June and July.
_ Thanks also to Kathy Cadien for her patience and understanding. Thanks to Dave Behrens, Jim
Lance, Sandra Millen, Will Jaeckle, and others who have sent information for this issue.
I would like to have a photograph of every opisthobranch worker to keep with their
publications and correspondence. I have collected a few snapshots over the years but would
especially appreciate photographs suitable for publication. Iwill try to arrange these for easy
access and may be able to publish them as a group some time in the future.
John D. Weichert is a brancher in the San Diego area. I need an address for him. Can someone
help? Please send the information to the editor.
I still need the author name for the paper entitled: "The Role of the Cerata in the Aeolid
Nudibranchs Hermissenda crassicornis (Eschscholtz, 1831) and Aeolidia papillosa (Linnaeus,
1761)." published about 1976 with Dr. R.G.B. Reid as supervisor and Larry Harris and Peter
Fankboner (among others) onthe committee. Larry only writes every two or three years but this
is terrible -- how about the information Larry!
Complete sets of Bergh's Semper's Reisen work should be available in the near future on
microfiche. I would be happy to provide sets with a microfiche reader as a package if anyone is
interested. Please write the editor stating your interest so that I may contact you when the
package is complete.
I have the capability to produce "species cards" on diazo film which would include from one to
three monochrome slides and about six to nine lines of natural history information on a 105mm x
148mm diazo sheet. If anyone is interested in preparing these please contact the editor.
For my opisthobranch library I need copies of all opisthobranch literature not found in
standard journals. I especially need copies of MSc. & PhD. papers. Please loan me copies to film
so that they will be available when someone needs them. Send originals by registered and/or
insured mail and I will film and return them within two weeks. I need Terry Gosliner's thesis. I
would also like to borrow a copy of Franc, 1968 and the Treatise on Invert. Palaeo.

CURRENT EVENTS
The 49th Annual Meeting of the American Malacological Union (joined by the Western Society of
Malacologists) was held 7-13 August, 193, at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington.
Meetings were held in McCarty Hall. Hegistration started Sunday afternoon. I arrived on
Wednesday and had a very enjoyable time seeing many long-time friends. Slide shows were held on
several of the evenings.
Some of the opisthobranch people attending included: Dave Mulliner, Steve Long, Trish Morse,
Terry Gosliner, Connie Boone, Sandra Millen, Will Jaeckle, Pat LaFollette, Sally Bennett, A.0.D.
Willows, Philip Lloyd, Gerald Audesirk, and Ron Shimek.
My attendance was limited primarily to Wednesday evening and Thursday as I had my new job to
take care of at home. I really hope to do things right next year at the Santa Cruz (tentative
location) meetings of the WSM. I will try to attend the entire meeting. Terry Gosliner will
chair a symposium on the biology of opisthobranchs. Ihave been named editor of the WSM bulletin
for the coming year and hope to get the job done before the end of 1983.
Papers were presented by Pat LaFollette, Sandra Millen, Louis Bickell, Ron Shimek, A.0.D.
Willows, Gerald Audesirk, and Philip Lloyd. I hope to have abstracts of the papers in the near
future if the authors will cooperate.

NOTES ON OPISTHOBRANCHTIA
Counting Opisthobranch Eggs and other Strange uses for a Microfiche Reader. I don't know how
Gascoigne & Wallis went about counting ascoglossan eggs as I have not seen their 1982 paper in
The Journal of Molluscan Studies [0N10386]. For those of you who have microfiche readers, the
answer is simple -- open the glass flats; put the egg mass (or part of it) on the glass flat; slide
the carrier in; and you can view on a full sized screen. The first time you do this with your
reader, I suggest that you use material in a microscope slide pair and close the carrier very
gently to make certain the thickness is not to great. If you have room for one glass slide but not
for a cover, put one slide near each edge of the bottom glass flat and your working material in
between. This will prevent crushing your material. Most of the modern fiche carriers remove
easily for cleaning.
If you want to get fancy, you may put a transparent overlay on the screen to measure uniform
areas. If you really want to get fancy, use a reader printer in the positive printing mode and you
should get a print better than most line drawings. With a little calculation, you can even
calibrate your reader screen to measure size.
Your reader is good for anything requiring between 18X and 48X enlargement where the original
material is transparent and not too bulky. I view color slides with my reader and most microscope
slides will work well also. -- Steven J. Long

PERSONAL NOTES
Shane Anderson is working at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He has sent a
specimen of a tiny Polycera to Dave Behrens.
From Jim Lance: "A number of colleagues have inquired about the progress of my proposed
volume dealing with the opisthobranchs of the Panamic faunal province -- that is, the warm water
coast between the Galapagos Islands and the northern part of the Sea of Cortez. I'm pleased to
report that the publisher's deadline for a first manuscript 'December 31st, 1983' is right on, if
not a little ahead of schedule.
Some two hundred species of mostly shell-less opisthobranchs are being treated, and of these
about 94% of publishable photos are in hand. It is evident that illustrations of a few species
will have to be paintings or line drawings. Appendices of egg masses, veliger shells, jaw plates,
radulae and other anatomical features are about half done.
Although I've actively been collecting data from this region for twenty-five years,
opisthobranch faunas from vast areas of the Central and South American coast remain unknown.
In order to make this volume as complete as possible, I would be very happy to receive data and/or
photos from readers of ON interested in contributing to this project."
The Opisthobranch Newsletter is now officially in Humboldt County, California. The move was
very hectic and expensive but things seem to be settling in nicely. One major flaw is my computer
system which has not yet arrived. I was trading it in on a new system which was to be delivered
prior to my leaving Southern California,-however, the dealer has not seen fit to follow through on
“his commitment. I am doing this newsletter on a rented system.
Jim McLean, Joe Houbrick, Sylvard Kool, and Pat LaFollette stopped by the Long's new home on
their way up tothe meetings. Pat & Jim stopped by again on their way south. Iam hoping that some
of the other folks will stop by later this month.
From Hans Bertsch: "Life continues insanely in Mexico. Good luck with your move; hope itis a
good one for you." Yes, I will look up my Veligers for you, Hans.
Dave and Peg Mulliner are back from their trip to the South Pacific. They were on Samoa for 2
days, then to Tonga for three weeks, Fiji for some time, and Hawaii for two weeks. Hurricane
Oscar tore up much of the reef area in March so the collecting was not exceptional.
Jim Lance recently made a trip to Nyarit and Sinaloa in Mexico. The major report from Jim was
that it was HOT! I hope to hear more in the next few weeks.
From Kathe Jensen (Ellebjergvej 22, 1.th., DK-2450 Copenhagen SV, Denmark): I am presently
back in Denmark (unemployed again). In April I participated in "The 2nd International Workshop
on the Malacogauna of Hong Kong and Southern China". Malacologists from all over the world
(very few opisthobranch people, though) got together for almost 3 weeks, working very hard in the
field as well as in the lab., socializing -- almost as hard --, and eating -- chopsticks only --
together under rather primitive conditions, but everything was so well planned that I think every
on of us felt kind of sad when it was over. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my
warmest thanks to the organizers, Dr. Brian Morton and Dr. David Dudgeon -- hoping, of course,
that they will organize another workshop soon.
I collected about 13 species of Ascoglossa, of which at least one, possibly 3 or 4 are new
species. The rest have been described from Japan, India, or Australia, but nobody has ever
really looked at Ascoglossa in Hong Kong (Sherman Bleakney collected a few species a few years
ago), so they'll all be new records for the area. I was somewhat disappointed at the scarcity of
suitable food algae in the Hong Kong area, because the climate seems to be very similar to that in
Florida, but apparently the huge amount of fresh-water run-off from the continent decreases
salinity sufficiently to prevent growth of certain algae. I was especially surprised (and
disappointed) at the complete absence of calcified siphonalean green algae (e.g. Halimeda,
Penicillus, etc.), which are the most common substrates for Ascoglossa. Being out of work now, I
have plenty of time to look at my preserved material, but it may be a problem to get serial sections
of specimens.
I just finished revising a manuscript on my toxicity experiments with Mourgona germineae --
what a pain in the neck without a word processor. 3
In one of his latest letters to me, Tom Gascoigne revealed that he will be 80 years old in
August. I would like to bring my birthday greetings and best wishes for the future through the
ON.

From Antonio Perrone: "I am an Italian university student of biology. I am very interested in
nudibranchs and have been working on them since 1975. I have already published one paper on the
bivalve genus Ostreola and four papers on opisthobranchs [editor - one of these is #10256].
Other papers are in press."

EDITOR'S NOTES
I am again in need of drawings for the ON. I would appreciate drawings of animals recently
described or which have been obscure or poorly illustrated. Please send the drawings along with
synonymy, range, and natural history notes where possible. As the number of drawings increases
' (already over 130), the utility of the newsletter increases for reference purposes.
Thanks to Judith Hunter, Jim Lance, Dave Behrens, Kikutar6 Baba, J. Sherman Bleakney, and
others who sent information for this issue.

EDITOR'S NOTES
As several of you have already figured out -- I have moved again! My original intent of moving
to Eureka was to quit my microfilm sales work for a year and concentrate on several opisthobranch
publications. My company wanted me to continue my sales and that made it impossible to do my
personal work. Now I will take a 3 to 6 month leave of absence and try to get the majority of my
pganch work done along with a bit of travel and the Western Society of Malacologists Annual
eport.
I have already scheduled England for Christmas time. I will be in Manchester from December
22, 1983 to January 4, 1984. I hope to see all of you who are there around that time. Please write
if you will be available during that time and include addresses and telephones where I may reach
you.
Please write if there are any special opisthobranch happenings coming up within the next six
months. I just might be able to attend some. I am seriously considering a trip to Japan and
Australia during November if it can be arranged.

notes below).

EDITOR’S NOTES
These two numbers close out a phase of the "Opisthobranch Newsletter." Volume
16 will bring several changes which I hope will please everyone. I am increasing the
scope and size of the ON. The "Newsletter" part of the name will be dropped as the
"Opisthobranch" will be more like a monthly magazine. The publication schedule will
be for the 15th day of each month so that you will know when to look for your issue.
There will be a minimum of eight pages in each issue and the typesetting and paper
quality will be improved significantly. Each issue will include a full color plate of
an opisthobranch species plus the normal notes and news found in recent issues.
The extra four pages (or more) each issue will be filled with more general
malacological information and pictures presented in a style similar to the ON. I hope
to be able to gamer enough subscribers to make the publication pay its way for the
color. The broader base is the only answer I can find. Please support the
"Opisthobranch" with your subscriptions and by recommending it to your friends. More
subscribers will mean more pages for the "Opisthobranch" and a broader base for
information. As the publication evolves, I hope that you will take the time to
contact me with your suggestions and comments.
Articles sent for publication in the "Opisthobranch" may include color or black
and white illustrations. 35mm color transparencies and/or prints may be sent in
OPISTHOBRANCH NEWSLETTER Nov.-Dec., 1983 Vol.15, Num.11-12, Page 52
although the slides are preferred. Minor notes may appear within 30 days of
submission. Material requiring editorial board review will probably take a minimum of
60 days for publication. Original artwork and sides will be returned only on request
and only if a returm envelope, addressed and stamped, is included when they are sent
to me.
Color 35mm transparencies are welcome additions to my library. Please indicate
any restrictions on their use when you send them. If they are published or
duplicated, credit will be given to the photographer, but no other compensation can be
made at this time.
One problem occurs with the new publication -- what to do with the opisthobranch
citations! I believe that I have a solution that will satisfy everyone (or at least
most everyone). If you will notify me when you renew your subscription, I will send
photocopy lists of nothing but citations about every-other issue or whenever I have
two full pages. These will be included as a separate to your "Opisthobranch" issue at
no charge. I will also continue to collate and index citations for separate major
listings.
I am very excited to be going to Ingland (next week) and with moving, Christmas,
the "Opisthobranch" and other happenings; I am slow answering some requests. My
apologies for any inconvience this may have caused you. I am just now getting some of
my books and back issues of the ON out of storage and it will be after the first of
the year before I finish up. I will go through all of my correspondence carefully and
try to get everything taken care of by the end of January. If you feel that I have
forgotten to send you something, please drop me a card and remind me. It is possible
that some notes have been lost in one of my recent moves by me or by the post office.
A typographical error in ON, Volume 15(9), at the bottom of page 43 changed
Bugula to Bubula. Bugula is the correct spelling.
Thanks to Eveline Marcus, Dave Mulliner, Will Jaeckle, Dave Behrens, Hans
Bertsch, R.C. Willan, Steve Newswanger, Malcolm Edmunds, Kikutaro Baba, T.E. Thompson,
and others who have recently sent information for the ON.

Los Angeles, Califomia 90089-0371
During an eleven week stay (January - March, 1983) at the Catalina Marine Science
Center, Santa Catalina Island, a total of thirty-four species of opisthobranch
gastropods were collected from littoral habitats. The collections of Cuthona abronia
(MacFarland, 1966) and C. virens (MacFarland, 1966) represent geographical range
extensions.
Cuthona abronia (MacFarland, 1966) Two specimens of C. abronia were collected in
a rocky littoral locality at Big Fisherman “s Cove (Longitude 118 29° 00" W; Latitude
33° 26° 38" N). Both specimens coloration matched the original description
(MacFarland, 1966). The previous southernmost occurrence was Pismo Beach, San Luis
Obispo County, California (Long, 1969a), 266km north of the Santa Catalina Island
collection site. One voucher specimen has been deposited in the malacological
collection of the Los Angeles Coumty Museum of Natural History bearing the catalog
number 98568.
Cuthona virens (MacFarland, 1966) Three specimens of this cuthonid were
collected from a rocky out-cropping at Little Fishermans Cove (Longitude 118 29° 26"
W; Latitude 33° 26° 38" N). This collection represents a geographical range extension
of 276km from the previous southernmost occurrence, Shell Beach, San Luis Obispo
County, California (Long, 1969b). A single specimen has been deposited in the
malacological collection of the Los Angeles Coummty Museum of Natural History bearing
the catalog number 98569.
